Big Little Rituals: Sienna King
If you’ve been paying attention to the fashion industry, then Sienna King’s face might be familiar. As muse to designer Maximilian Davis and a regular on both the runway and in the pages of magazine editorials, Sienna spends her days in the hands of the best hair and makeup experts in the business (including Browns' favourite, Issac Poleon). Perhaps that’s why, when it comes to her own beauty routine, Sienna’s practices are all about cleansing, unwinding and relaxing. Taking time for herself to escape the mayhem of her day-to-day, and offering her skin and hair some nourishing TLC outside her busy working routine. We chatted to Sienna to learn more…
The first thing I do when I wake up is…
I usually wake up three times in the morning. I set three alarms so that I can wake up gradually and allow my body to get out of bed with ease. Once awake, I either look out the window or at the ceiling, and try to remember my dream from last night.
The ritual that brings me the most joy is...
A massage of my face with some of my go-to moisturisers including the Haeckels Kelp Bioferment moisturising gel. I massage in upward and circular motions with my Gua Sha, finger tips, palms or knuckles. I follow this with some mouth and tongue exercises. It's therapeutic and wakes the muscles in my face up, and makes my skin feel fresh and supple.
Beauty to me is...
Loving the off days when you’re not wearing makeup, and embracing that pimple that is staring everyone in the face. Being beautiful regardless!
In the evening…
At the end of a long week, I like to take the time to do a face mask before bed. I use a Grown Alchemist mask. Also, taking the time to deep cleanse my face after a long week. Sometimes there’s no break in the week, so it’s rewarding for me to use a day off to reflect and unwind and take some “me time” with my skincare ritual.
I feel most relaxed when...
I’m watching a film or series, curled up in bed with my hair bonnet on and fresh bed sheets that smell divine.
The beauty MVPs I can’t live without are...
The Haeckels Kelp Bioferment moisturising gel – game changer for me.
For beauty advice, I look to...
Friends and family. If they've tried it and it could work for me, I’m down!
My biggest beauty extravagance...
I recently treated myself to my first luxury facial - the full works; extractions, steam, massage. My skin was revitalised after.
My earliest beauty-related memory is...
When my auntie saw me creaming as a young teenager, she was in shock. She told me: “You don’t need to be so rough, it’s your face! Take time and moisturise upwards, you’ll thank me later.” So, thank you auntie!
I feel most beautiful when...
I’ve finished my full hair routine: wash, condition, oil treatment, and detangling my curls. I adore taking the time to perfect and love on my hair. I have been on a hair journey for over five years and new products excite me, especially when they work like a dream. New favourites for afro and curly hair are Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil, BREAD gentle milky hair cleanse and Bouclème curls redefined conditioner.
My favourite smell is...
BREAD gentle milky hair cleanse – obsessed with the lemony goodness.
My beauty icon...
Kelly Rowland. I wanted to be her growing up. She rocked a variety of red and red-streaked hairstyles in the 2000s which I adored as a young girl, and still do. Red is my favourite colour. Her hairstyles inspired me to have fun and play with my hair.
One beauty secret...
I let my face air dry, and apply moisturisers whilst my skin is still damp.
When I’m travelling…
If my hair is braided or in an afro, I have to apply my oils and shea butters to keep my hair nourished for the journey. I wear a silk scarf to protect and keep my hair tidy before arriving at my destination.
EVERY DAY…
I turn on my shower and let the bathroom steam up. First I double cleanse my face - I use a black charcoal and turmeric soap accompanied by the Haeckels Marine Facial Cleanser or CeraVe Cleansing Foam. After bathing and brushing my teeth, I moisturise my face and skin. The face process is thorough. First, I air semi-dry, apply a moisturising spray and then Haeckels Kelp Bioferment Moisturising skin gel, avocado, rosehip and tea tree oils and massage in an SPF to seal them all. Depending on the state of my hair, I apply a mist of water to open the hair strands and then some oil for sheen and nourishment throughout the day.
SOME DAYS...
When I want to do a complete detox of my hair, my go to is a Moroccan Rhassoul clay mask with apple cider vinegar. It’s a natural clay that removes bacteria and clarifies hair. It’s great for drawing dirt and excess oils from hair strands and the scalp, whilst restoring moisture. It’s one of those products you use and you see the results instantly - my curls are so defined, curly and luscious looking.
BIRTHDAY…
On special occasions I love getting my hair braided, either a simple or extravagant braiding style. My hair is cleansed and feels fresh, and the addition of a protective style that gives a natural face lift is all the things I look forward to. Once the braids are laid, I apply the Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil so my scalp is clean, clear and juicy!
